Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has admitted he shares a portion of the fault for a serious injury to the squad’s quarterback, Jayden Daniels.
Details of the Harm and Context
Daniels, who had one of the greatest rookie campaigns in history the previous year, sustained a dislocated left elbow in Sunday’s defeat to the Seahawks. Even though Daniels passes with his dominant arm, the issue has left his campaign uncertain. The injury was serious enough that the TV coverage avoided showing replays and several athletes looked away as he was attended to by team doctors.
Backlash and Leader’s Response
Quinn came under criticism as numerous felt Daniels should not have been on the playing surface to begin with. The incident happened in the fourth quarter with the Commanders trailing 38-7, making a recovery unlikely. It is common in such situations for teams to put in their reserve QB to prevent harm to their first-string player.
“I understand. I’ve been thinking about it nonstop, too, and, wow, I erred,” he said of his decision to leave Daniels in the game. “This is 100% my fault.”
Aftermath and Squad Prospects
Mariota will be the team’s starting quarterback going forward, but he will lead a team in disarray. Following making the conference title game last season behind the rookie’s excellence, the team have faced difficulties currently. They also saw injuries to cornerback Lattimore (torn ACL) and wide receiver Luke McCaffrey (collarbone fracture) on Sunday, and have a number of other key players on the injury list. The Commanders are three wins and six losses on the season, and it would take a massive turnaround for the club to make the playoffs.
